Fee’s Book Reviews – The House With Chicken Legs

The House With Chicken Legs by Sophie Anderson. Recommended Reading Age: 8 - 12 years + From The Back Cover: Marinka dreams of a normal life, where her house stays in one place long enough for her to make friends. But her house has chicken legs and moves on without warning. For Marinka's grandmother is Baba Yaga, who guides spirits between this world and the next. Marinka longs to change her destiny and sets out to break free from her grandmother’s footsteps, but her house has other ideas… First off I’ll start by saying this is my favourite children’s book that I have read in quite some time. It was a rash purchase and I chose it based solely on the title - which is very unlike me, as I usually research books or at least flick through them first. I din't regret it though as I honestly couldn’t put…

Movies According To Mischief – The Queen’s Corgi

The Queen's Corgi Directed by: Ben Stassen and Vincent Kesteloot, Cast: Jack Whitehall, Julie Walters, Matt Lucas, Sheridan Smith I am a sucker for a good children’s movie, generally of the animation giants of Disney, Pixar and Dreamworks but sometimes a little hidden gem comes along and from the trailer, The Queen’s Corgi looked exactly that. Fun, easy going childish humour, with Jack Whitehall voicing Rex, the Queen’s favourite corgi. As a bit of Jack Whitehall fan I thought this would be a wonderful film to see, and the supporting cast isn’t half bad either with the likes of Julie Walters, Ray Winstone, Matt Lucas and Sheridan Smith. Let's say, sometimes we make mistakes in life, eh?So as a children’s film, the plot is basic. I didn’t realise how basic it would feel. HRH Queen (Julie Walters) has a favourite dog, Rex (Jack Whitehall). Rex seeks adventure, Rex gets lost,…

Movies According To Mischief – Toy Story 4

Toy Story 4 Directed by: Josh Cooley Cast: Woody, Forky, Bo Peep, Buzz Lightyear, Hamm, Mr Potato Head, Mrs Potato Head, Slinky, Rex, Jessie, Bullseye 24 years ago, one of the biggest animation triumphs came to our screens. I was 4 years old and I distinctly remember opening my Christmas presents and finding a copy of Toy Story. There it began. I cannot be the only one in my generation who feels such a closeness with Pixar’s Toy Story franchise. I feel like I am 4 years old again, the cast are old friends, the voices are the same, it’s like a sign of relief at having that familiarity. Also, the Toy Story franchise, unlike many other franchises, does not have a bad movie. Not one. A franchise so treasured, I doubt Pixar wouldn’t dare spoil it with a bad installment.Toy Story (1995) was like an introduction, see the toys…

Movies According To Mischief – Yesterday

Yesterday Directed By: Danny Boyle Cast: Himesh Patel, Lily James, Joel Fry For those of you who do not know me that well, I love The Beatles. To me, there is no better night out than catching a train off to Liverpool, and dancing the day and night away in The Cavern Club with a bottle (or two) of champagne (£35 - Black Label Lanson, at the time of previous visit, which for non-champagne fans, it is usually easily double that price). I was definitely born in the wrong era. This is music that makes me happy, these are songs that will stand the test of time, the birth of rock and roll, Merseybeat, northern soul. So, when I heard last year that Danny Boyle was making a film about The Beatles, I was a tad excited, but also praying to the movie Gods that it would be at the…

As A Freelancer, Do I Need To Make A Second Payment On Account? Pt.2.

For the uninitiated, you may be wondering what a ‘second payment on account’ is. If you’re a freelancer,  sole trader or have any earnings outside of PAYE, you may need to make two advance payments on account towards your current year’s tax bill. Mike Parkes from GoSimpleTax has provided an overview on your responsibilities. How Is The Second Payment On Account Calculated? It’s important to remember that payments on account are based on your earnings from the previous year. This means that, should your income dramatically fall, your payments on account may be reduced to reflect a lower income. You can therefore make a claim to reduce your payments on account. Be careful though: reduce them too much and you can incur an interest charge on any tax shortfall. The opposite applies if your income increases (as this will result in a ‘balancing payment’ on 31 st January of any shortfall from your two payments…

Movies According To Mischief – Late Night

Late Night Directed by: Nisha Ganatra Cast: Mindy Kaling, Emma Thompson Tough choice this week of films to see, as I’m not into the superhero genre of film that is dominating cinemas at the moment with the Avengers & X-Men franchises. I am sure they are very good, but they would be totally lost on me, and I understand my review would not be fair. Therefore it was a choice between the Secret Life of Pets 2 or Late Night. I’m not sure if it’s me, but I’ve not seen any advertising for Late Night but it seemed like it could be a hidden gem. Now I’m about to admit something controversial so please don’t bombard me with tweets; Emma Thompson is one of the very few people who I see, and I instantly dislike. I don’t know why, it could be that she wrote additional Peter Rabbit stories, which I’m…
