Guide To Tax Changes Impacting Landlords Pt.2.

One in 10 people now own a second house. Yet, despite it being a fruitful investment, tax legislation surrounding landlords remains largely unclear. Taxes associated with buy-to-let property are collectively known as ‘landlord tax’. To make matters more complicated, such legislation is varied and complete, comprehensive advice is scarce. With that being the case, we thought it would be useful to breakdown the two most discussed components of landlord tax and detail exactly what you need to know. The Burden of Stamp Duty .Stamp Duty Land Tax also needs to be on your radar as a landlord. A tax paid when buying a property in England and Wales, it’s been widely criticised (by both landlords and regular homeowners) as being unnecessary at an already expensive time. There have also been instances of buyers overpaying. In the 2018-19 tax year alone, nearly £400m was returned to those who had paid too much. Regardless,…

Guide To Tax Changes Impacting Landlords Pt.1.

The dismantling of interest tax relief If you’re a BTL landlord, one thing you need to get to grips with is interest tax relief. Traditionally, landlords were required to declare rental income but could claim mortgage interest as an expense – drastically reducing their profit from rental income and subsequently their Self Assessment tax bill. However, this changed for the worse (for landlords at least) in 2017 when it was decided that claiming mortgage…

Movies According To Mischief – Blinded By The Light

Blinded By The Light Directed By: Gurinder Chadha Cast: Viveik Kalra, Aaron Phagura, Nell Williams, Rob Brydon Maybe it’s because I am curious, or you could say plain nosey, but when my local cinema advertised “A Secret Screening”, I booked tickets straight away for the boyfriend and the mother coming along too. Quite the little family outing! I will fully admit, as the screening got nearer, we started trying to figure out what the movie would be. By the tickets, we knew it was a 15 certificate rating and was 90 minutes long. I was hoping it was the new Annabelle movie, Mum was praying for Downton Abbey whilst the boyfriend was wishfully thinking it was The Matrix, as it’s the 20 year anniversary of that little gem. It was also decided that if it was The Matrix, the mother and I would escape to Nando’s next door... So, imagine…

Fee’s Book Reviews – The House With Chicken Legs

The House With Chicken Legs by Sophie Anderson. Recommended Reading Age: 8 - 12 years + From The Back Cover: Marinka dreams of a normal life, where her house stays in one place long enough for her to make friends. But her house has chicken legs and moves on without warning. For Marinka's grandmother is Baba Yaga, who guides spirits between this world and the next. Marinka longs to change her destiny and sets out to break free from her grandmother’s footsteps, but her house has other ideas… First off I’ll start by saying this is my favourite children’s book that I have read in quite some time. It was a rash purchase and I chose it based solely on the title - which is very unlike me, as I usually research books or at least flick through them first. I din't regret it though as I honestly couldn’t put…

Movies According To Mischief – The Queen’s Corgi

The Queen's Corgi Directed by: Ben Stassen and Vincent Kesteloot, Cast: Jack Whitehall, Julie Walters, Matt Lucas, Sheridan Smith I am a sucker for a good children’s movie, generally of the animation giants of Disney, Pixar and Dreamworks but sometimes a little hidden gem comes along and from the trailer, The Queen’s Corgi looked exactly that. Fun, easy going childish humour, with Jack Whitehall voicing Rex, the Queen’s favourite corgi. As a bit of Jack Whitehall fan I thought this would be a wonderful film to see, and the supporting cast isn’t half bad either with the likes of Julie Walters, Ray Winstone, Matt Lucas and Sheridan Smith. Let's say, sometimes we make mistakes in life, eh?So as a children’s film, the plot is basic. I didn’t realise how basic it would feel. HRH Queen (Julie Walters) has a favourite dog, Rex (Jack Whitehall). Rex seeks adventure, Rex gets lost,…
